GPS Drawings - Kate Kinser
Our group first chose to drive for the GPS Drawing Project. We started from the highway entrance off of Michigan, and headed East, toward Chicago. Our initial idea was to exit at the first exit we saw, and then get back on the highway at the next sign we saw to the on-ramp. Sometimes this took a while, and we would drive pretty far before seeing any signs to get back onto the highway. We also began following things that interested us, like smoke from a burning building, or police cars blocking off roads because of an accident. We also went to Bayshore to have lunch, and continued to let the application track us through the mall. We drove for 2 hours, and traveled 31.3 miles, reaching a maximum speed of 77.4 mph. I drove while the other members of the group documented the journey. We went as far South as Morgandale, and as far North as Whitefish Bay.

ReplyDeleteI really am glad we took the highway because there are a lot of us who take advantage of highways. I like the idea of exiting off different exits and following what we saw interesting! If someone notices on the map, most of the map consists of highways and we figured we should take the main highways and approach it a different way. My group members and I decided to drive on many different highways and see why alot of us takes the highway, is it because of easier access or is it because highways takes us away from our location? The highway for us as we were driving took us away from our destination. We saw alot of landscape we wouldn't see driving on the main streets. For example, as we were driving off the highway, we notice there were smoke and we immediately took off the closest exit to follow the smoke. I also think that this can relate to the human needs of knowing what is happening. We want to get personal and want to understand what happened and who was in charge of this crime. Highways can also be seen as a connection to bring a city closer to each other. For example, my group members and I can say that it's a relationship based on trust. We trust the highway to take us to our destination which is why it brought us the smoke and the police accident.
